FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Avatari announces flagship Tudor Creek Mangrove Restoration to unlock high-integrity blue-carbon and shared prosperity in Mombasa

Mombasa, Kenya — 2 September 2025 — Avatari International LLP, through its Kenyan affiliate Avatari Development Kenya (ADK), today announced the launch of a landmark mangrove restoration and protection initiative the Coast Region’s most important focused on Tudor Creek—one of estuarine ecosystems. The project aims to restore degraded mangrove stands, enhance nursery habitats for fisheries, and generate high-integrity blue-carbon credits that directly benefit local communities.

“From day one, this project is designed around people, place, and permanence,” said Jeremy Morrelli, Founder of Avatari International. “Tudor Creek’s mangroves protect shorelines, sustain biodiversity, and store immense amounts of carbon. Our job is to restore ecological function and ensure the value created flows back into Mombasa’s communities.”

Under its community-first model, Avatari commits 40% of net project profits to a locally governed Community Benefit Fund for livelihoods, education, and climate resilience. The program will prioritize training and micro-enterprise in mangrove beekeeping, nature-based tourism, sustainable aquaculture, and shoreline stabilization, alongside youth skills development and women-led cooperatives.

“Trust is our license to operate,” said Harry Cook, Chief Executive, Avatari Development Kenya. “We’re embedding transparent MRV, open data, and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) into each step. Our monitoring will track not only carbon, but co-benefits—fisheries recovery, biodiversity, and reduced erosion—so communities can see and steer the outcomes.”

The Tudor Creek program will proceed in phases:

• Protection & Restoration: Site mapping, natural regeneration, enrichment planting, and hydrological rehabilitation in priority sub-catchments.

• High-Integrity Credits: Blue-carbon issuance aligned to leading standards and emerging integrity frameworks, with public dashboards and third-party verification.

• Livelihoods & Inclusion: Local hiring, capacity building, and micro-grants for nature-positive enterprises; structured grievance redress and human-rights safeguards.

• Science & Education: Partnerships with Kenyan universities and schools for long-term ecological monitoring, seagrass/mudflat research, and climate literacy.

Senior legal and governance oversight is provided by Steven Kay KC, ensuring robust agreements on land tenure, carbon rights, and benefit-sharing with public authorities and community representatives.

“We are called to assist the Earth to heal her wounds and in the process heal our own.” — Wangarĩ Maathai

Why Tudor Creek

Tudor Creek’s mangrove mosaic—fringing forests, creeks, mudflats and adjacent seagrass—supports critical biodiversity, coastal protection, and fisheries nurseries for Mombasa’s urban shoreline. Restoring ecological function here delivers immediate, local benefits while contributing to Kenya’s climate goals and the global transition to nature-based economies.

Call for partners

Avatari invites local community groups, conservation NGOs, research institutions, tourism operators, and mission-aligned investors to co-develop this program. Stakeholder consultations begin this month in Mombasa, with implementation milestones published on a public project portal.
